Run a team of guerrilla gardeners reclaiming a near-future food desert. You'll be vying against cops and landowners in turn-based conflicts where they're armed with stunguns and tear gas* and you're armed with shovels and seed/manure bombs. Whatever transformations you make to the land as you play are kept in subsequent runs.

"Cultivating Insurgency" started as a LOWREZJAM 2019 game. It was inspired by some game ideas we had on our idea board as well as some of the jam's optional themes: "Transformation", "Feed the world", and "Aftermath".

* planned

"Cultivating Insurgency" is incomplete. Version 1.0.0 contains:

  • One enemy type (taser cops)
  • Two player unit types (melee shovelers and ranged seed bombers)
  • Eleven levels
  • No end state

Instructions:

You have a limited number of units to deploy. Each set of five crops in a single level gives you an additional unit stock at the beginning of a run. If all deployed units are defeated, or you end a level with no unit stock left, your run is over.

If a unit (player or enemy) is hit, they are stunned for a turn and cannot act. If they are hit while stunned, they are defeated. Defeat all enemies to end a level and unlock all adjacent levels for the current run.

Your units have secondary actions that can modify the map for all future runs. The shoveler can transform dirt into plowed land. The sower can transform plowed land into seedlings. At the end of each run, all seedlings will turn into crops.
